Featured Artist for February 1: CAKE
In all probability the greatest band EVER from Sacramento, CA - this week's Featured Artist on Up All Night is none other than CAKE! I've loved this band ever since hearing their first single "Rock And Roll Lifestyle" on my local college radio station. Their penchant for offbeat lyrics, clever instrumentation and smokin' live shows have given rise to a cult-like following all over the world.
Led by frontman and lyricist John McRea, CAKE have been true to their musical vision for 20 years, and have just released their sixth album of original material entitled Showroom Of Compassion which opened at Number 1 on the Billboard album charts last week. CAKE defy all attempts to define their musical genre, employing a unique style of half-spoken, half-sung lyrics, along with a solo trumpet and rockabilly guitar to create a unique and compelling sound.
Having had the good fortune to see CAKE live (right here at the U of C's MacEwan Hall), I can tell you they absolutely bring it old school in their concert appearances. Regardless of whether you're a longtime CALE fan, or if you're new to the band's music, you'll definitely want to check out Up All Night this week. And if you have a favourite CAKE tune to request, leave it via the comment section below and we'll add it to the playlist.
Cheers eh!
